How to use

Type your words in the textarea, one word per line. Letters and dashes only, 2-15 characters per word. Duplicates get rejected automatically.

Pick a grid size from the dropdown. 10x10 fits short word lists. 15x15 is the classroom default. 20x20 gives you room for longer words or bigger word counts.

Pick a difficulty. Easy is across-and-down only — best for younger kids. Medium adds diagonals (NE and SE). Hard adds reverse directions too, so words can run backwards in any direction.

Optionally type a title — it prints at the top of the puzzle. Useful for 'Mrs. Lee's Vocab Week 3' or 'Sophie's Birthday Party'.

Hit Print for a paper-ready copy, or Copy as text to paste into a worksheet template. Click Show Solution to highlight where each word landed — flip it back off before printing the puzzle itself.

If a word couldn't fit (too long, or the grid is too crowded), the word list shows it crossed out and the tool tells you which ones to shorten or move to a bigger grid.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free? What's the catch?

It's free because the whole puzzle is built in your browser. There's no server processing your word list, no account to make, no PDF to wait on. We pay for the page; the math is cheap because your laptop does it. Members (annual fee, like Costco) see no ads. Non-members see a few ads on the page — that's how the lights stay on.

Can I print the puzzle?

Yes — hit the Print button and your browser's print dialog opens. The grid is sized to fit comfortably on Letter or A4 paper. Turn the solution overlay OFF before printing the student copy, then turn it ON for the teacher's answer key. Same tool, two prints.

Why won't some of my words fit?

Two reasons. (1) The word is longer than the grid size — a 16-letter word can't fit in a 15x15. (2) The grid filled up before the placer could find a clean spot. The fix is the same in both cases: bigger grid, shorter words, or both. The word list shows un-placed words crossed out so you know what to adjust.

What's the difference between Easy, Medium, and Hard?

Easy uses only horizontal (left-to-right) and vertical (top-to-bottom) directions. Best for first and second graders. Medium adds two diagonals (up-right and down-right) — middle elementary. Hard adds reverse directions in all four, so words can run right-to-left, bottom-to-top, or any diagonal — middle school and up.

How many words can I add?

Depends on your grid and word lengths. A 15x15 grid comfortably holds 12-18 words averaging 5-7 letters. A 20x20 fits 20-30. If you push it too far the placer will tell you which words couldn't fit — that's a clearer signal than a silent partial result.

Does the same word list always make the same puzzle?

No — each click of Regenerate reshuffles the layout. So you can make multiple versions of the same word list for a class (kids can't copy off each other) or print a fresh one if the first layout had something awkward. The grid is filled with random distractor letters, so the surrounding noise also changes each time.

Can I see where the words are?

Yes — toggle 'Show solution' and every placed word lights up green on the grid. Toggle it back off before you print the student copy. This is the answer-key flow: same tool, same grid, two prints.

Is my word list saved anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser tab. Close the tab and the list is gone. There's no account, no log, no upload. If you want to keep a word list, copy it out before you leave the page.
