How to Write Numbers in Words (With Examples)

Microapp

Writing a number in words is mostly a matter of breaking it into chunks. Split the digits into groups of three from the right, name each group, and tack on the scale word — thousand, million, billion. So 12,100 becomes "twelve thousand, one hundred." It's the kind of thing that's simple until the number gets long and you lose your place, which is exactly when the number to words converter earns its keep — type the figure and it spells it out.

The method, step by step

  1. Split the number into groups of three digits from the right: 173560 becomes 173 | 560.
  2. Read each group as a normal three-digit number.
  3. Add the scale word after each group — thousand, million, billion — working left to right.

So 173,560 is "one hundred seventy-three thousand, five hundred sixty." The comma in the figure is your guide: each comma marks a new scale word.

The rules that trip people up

  • Hyphens. Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated: forty-seven, eighty-two. Round tens (twenty, fifty) and the hundreds aren't.
  • The word "and". In American English you don't use "and" in a whole number — it's "one hundred five," not "one hundred and five." British English does use it: "one hundred and five." The "and" traditionally marks a decimal point.
  • Zeros. Skip empty places. 1,005 is "one thousand five," not "one thousand zero hundred five."

How to write an amount on a check

This is where most people actually need it. On a check you write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction over 100. So $1,240.50 is written: "One thousand two hundred forty and 50/100." A few conventions matter here:

  • Use "and" only to separate dollars from cents — nowhere else.
  • Write the cents as a fraction (50/100), not in words.
  • Draw a line through any empty space after the amount so nothing can be added.

Getting the words and the numeral to match is what makes a check valid, so it's worth double-checking long amounts with the number to words converter before you sign.

Another way to write numbers: Roman numerals

Words aren't the only alternative to digits. Roman numerals still show up on clock faces, book chapters, and movie copyright dates — XIV for 14, MCMXCIX for 1999. If that's what you're after, the Roman numeral converter handles the conversion both ways.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a number in words?

Split it into groups of three digits from the right, read each group as a three-digit number, and add the scale word (thousand, million) after each. 45,300 is "forty-five thousand, three hundred."

Do I use "and" when writing numbers?

In American English, no — "two hundred five," not "two hundred and five." British English uses "and." On a check, "and" separates the dollars from the cents.

When do I hyphenate numbers in words?

Hyphenate the compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine: thirty-four, seventy-eight. Don't hyphenate round tens or hundreds.

How do I write dollars and cents on a check?

Write the dollars in words, then "and," then the cents as a fraction over 100. $84.20 is "Eighty-four and 20/100." Draw a line to fill any leftover space.

How do you write 1000000 in words?

One million. Each group of three zeros moves you up a scale: thousand, million, billion, trillion.
