Business Days Calculator

The Business Days Calculator answers two questions you can't easily do in your head: how many working days lie between two dates, and what date is N business days from today. It counts Mon–Fri, skips Saturdays and Sundays, and optionally skips US federal holidays through 2026. Project managers use it to plan SLAs and deliverables. HR uses it to count PTO accruals. Lawyers use it for procedural deadlines that exclude court holidays. The math is straightforward; the part that's annoying is keeping the holiday list right.

How to use

Pick a mode. "Count between dates" returns how many business days fall in a date range, both endpoints inclusive. "Add business days" walks N workdays forward (or backward) from a start date and returns the landing date.

Enter your dates. The date pickers accept any valid date; both modes reverse direction cleanly (count works regardless of order; add accepts negative numbers to walk backward).

Decide on holidays. The checkbox toggles US federal observed holidays for 2024–2026. Leave it on for HR, payroll, and federal procedural deadlines. Turn it off if your workplace doesn't observe federal holidays, or if you're computing on a non-US calendar.

Read the result. Count mode shows the business-day total plus a breakdown: calendar days spanned, weekends skipped, holidays skipped. Add mode shows the landing date in full (with weekday) plus the same breakdown.

Need a holiday this tool doesn't include? Federal US holidays through 2026 are baked in. Company-specific holidays (Good Friday at law firms, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, December 26 / Boxing Day) aren't — adjust the start date to compensate, or count the range that excludes those days.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a business day?

Monday through Friday, excluding observed US federal holidays when the holidays toggle is on. Saturdays and Sundays are always excluded. The tool doesn't account for company-specific holidays (Good Friday, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, December 26), regional holidays, or religious observances that aren't on the federal calendar.

Which holidays are included?

US federal holidays for 2024, 2025, and 2026: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When a holiday falls on Saturday, the observed date is the preceding Friday; when on Sunday, the following Monday. For 2026, July 4 is a Saturday — the observed federal holiday is Friday July 3.

Are both the start and end dates included in the count?

Yes. The "Count between dates" mode is inclusive on both ends, matching the timeanddate.com convention. Mon Jan 6 2025 to Fri Jan 10 2025 returns 5 business days (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri). If you want exclusive-of-end semantics (common in some HR contexts), subtract one from the result when the end date is itself a business day.

How does "Add business days" handle weekends and holidays?

It walks the calendar day-by-day from your start date, only ticking the counter forward (or backward, for negative inputs) when it lands on a business day. Weekends and toggled-on holidays are skipped silently — the breakdown tells you how many were jumped over. Add 10 business days to Mon Jan 6 2025 with holidays on, and the result is Tue Jan 21 (skipping 4 weekend days and MLK Day on Jan 20).

Can I count backward?

Yes. In "Add business days," type a negative number to walk backward. Useful for deadline math — if a deliverable is due 5 business days before December 15, the tool gives you the exact prep date. In "Count between dates," the order of the dates doesn't matter; the result is symmetric.

Why doesn't the tool include Good Friday, Boxing Day, or my company's holidays?

Because there's no universal answer. Good Friday is a paid holiday for federal contractors and many private employers, but not for federal employees. The day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) is closed for most US offices but not all. Christmas Eve and December 26 vary by employer. The tool sticks to the official US federal calendar — the one consistent baseline — and leaves company-specific adjustments to you. If your workplace closes for an extra day in a range, subtract one from the result.

Does it work for non-US calendars?

The weekend logic (Sat/Sun) is right for most countries. The holiday list is US-specific — for UK bank holidays, Canadian statutory holidays, EU national holidays, or any other regional calendar, turn the holidays toggle off and adjust manually. A localized version with country-specific holiday tables is on the roadmap.

How is this different from date-fns differenceInBusinessDays?

date-fns counts Mon–Fri only — it does not skip holidays. This tool's count matches date-fns for endpoint-inclusive ranges when holidays are toggled off, and goes further when holidays are on. The breakdown (weekends skipped, holidays skipped) is also a feature date-fns doesn't ship — useful for auditing the result.
