- Multiply length × width × height, with all three in feet. A storage unit 10 ft by 10 ft with an 8 ft ceiling is 800 ft³. If you measured in inches, multiply the inches and divide by 1,728, because a cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 inches: a 24 × 18 × 12 in carton is 5,184 in³, which is 3 ft³. Mixed units need converting first, which is what this calculator does field by field.

- 27. A cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards: 320 ft³ is 11.85 yd³. It matters because concrete, mulch, soil, and gravel are sold by the yard. An 8 × 4 ft raised bed filled 11 inches deep holds 29.33 ft³, just over 1 yd³ of soil.
