What does the Ounces to Pounds Converter do?

The Ounces to Pounds Converter turns any ounce value into pounds and back. The relationship is exact and was internationally standardized in 1959: 1 pound equals exactly 16 ounces. So 16 oz = 1 lb, 32 oz = 2 lb, 80 oz = 5 lb. Type a value in either field; the other updates as you type.

For ounce values over 16, the result also shows the pounds-and-ounces breakdown (e.g. 24 oz displays alongside "1 lb 8 oz"). That mixed form is how grocery scales and shipping weights are usually quoted in conversation, even though decimal pounds (1.5 lb) is what calculators expect.

When you'll use this conversion

Ounces and pounds show up everywhere imperial weight is measured in the US, UK, and Canada.

Cooking and baking. US recipes mix oz and lb constantly — "8 oz cream cheese," "1.5 lb beef," "2 sticks of butter (8 oz)." Converting between them keeps mental math fast when scaling recipes up or down.

Shipping and postage. USPS first-class mail rates use ounces up to 13 oz, then jump to "Priority Mail" pricing in pounds. International shipping to certain countries also uses pounds. Knowing whether your package is "13 oz or under" vs "1 lb" matters for postage calculation.

Grocery shopping. Cheese is sold in 8 oz blocks; butter in 16 oz packages (4 sticks, 4 oz each); pasta in 16 oz boxes; sugar in 4 lb bags. Mental math for quantity comparison ("which is cheaper per pound?") needs the conversion.

Body weight. Adult weight is in pounds; baby weight is in pounds and ounces ("7 lb 4 oz at birth"). Tracking changes that cross the 16-oz line means converting.

Fitness and nutrition. Protein servings (3 oz of chicken, 6 oz of fish), supplement weights, food prep portions — all in ounces, scaling to weekly totals in pounds.

The math

1 pound = 16 ounces (exactly, by definition)
To convert oz → lb: divide by 16
To convert lb → oz: multiply by 16

Worked example: a 24-ounce package of pasta.

  • 24 ÷ 16 = 1.5 lb (decimal form)
  • OR: 24 = (1 × 16) + 8 = 1 lb 8 oz (mixed form)

Both forms are correct; just different presentations of the same weight. Grocery scales usually show one or the other; nutritional labels usually show ounces; shipping software often wants decimal pounds.

Tips

Tip: the divide-by-16 mental conversion isn't bad — half of 16 is 8, so anything ending in 8 is half a pound (8 oz = 0.5 lb, 24 oz = 1.5 lb, 40 oz = 2.5 lb). For other values, use the calculator.

Avoid the troy ounce confusion. Troy ounces (used only for precious metals like gold and silver) follow a different rule: 12 troy oz = 1 troy pound. The everyday avoirdupois ounce uses 16. If someone tells you "this gold ring weighs 0.5 oz" they mean troy; if it's about food or shipping, they mean avoirdupois. The two pounds are also different (1 troy lb = 0.823 avoirdupois lb).

Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. A 16-fl-oz bottle of milk weighs about 16 oz (water-density coincidence) but a 16-fl-oz bottle of olive oil weighs ~14.7 oz, and 16 fl oz of honey weighs ~22.7 oz. For volume conversions, use the mL to fl oz Converter.

For metric, switch tools. 1 oz = 28.35 g; 1 lb = 453.59 g. The Grams to Ounces Converter handles oz↔g; the Weight Converter handles all common units.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces in a pound?

Exactly 16. The relationship is defined: 1 lb = 16 oz. So 2 lb = 32 oz, 5 lb = 80 oz, 10 lb = 160 oz. The 16-to-1 ratio comes from the international yard and pound agreement of 1959.

How many pounds is 32 ounces?

32 oz = exactly 2 pounds. To convert ounces to pounds, divide by 16. Other useful values: 16 oz = 1 lb, 24 oz = 1.5 lb, 48 oz = 3 lb, 80 oz = 5 lb.

How many pounds is 24 oz?

24 oz = 1.5 pounds, or in mixed form, 1 lb 8 oz. Anything between 16 and 32 oz is between 1 and 2 pounds. The converter shows both decimal pounds and the lb+oz breakdown when you enter ounces over 16.

What's the difference between oz and fl oz?

"Oz" measures weight (mass); "fl oz" (fluid ounces) measures volume (liquid). They're only equal for water, where 1 fl oz weighs about 1 oz by happy coincidence. For other liquids, the densities differ — 1 fl oz of honey weighs ~1.42 oz, 1 fl oz of olive oil weighs ~0.96 oz. This converter is for weight only. For volume, use the mL to fl oz Converter.

What about troy ounces — the kind for gold?

Troy ounces (31.1 g each) are heavier than avoirdupois ounces (28.35 g each) by about 10%. They're used only for precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum. Critically, troy weights also use a different pound: 1 troy lb = 12 troy oz (not 16). This converter uses avoirdupois throughout — the standard for cooking, food, body weight, and packages. If you're weighing precious metals, use a troy-ounce-specific converter.

How do I convert pounds to grams?

Multiply by 453.59. So 1 lb = 453.59 g, 5 lb = 2,267.95 g (about 2.27 kg). To go from oz to grams instead, multiply oz by 28.35. Or use this converter to go oz → lb, then a separate calculation for lb → kg. Easiest: use the Grams to Ounces Converter directly.
