- How many quarts are in a liter?
- 1.0567 US liquid quarts, or 0.8799 UK imperial quarts. Going the other way, one US quart is exactly 0.946352946 L and one imperial quart is exactly 1.1365225 L. So to convert liters to US quarts, divide by 0.946352946; for imperial quarts, divide by 1.1365225. A liter is a little more than a US quart and a little less than a UK one.
- What's the difference between a US quart and a UK quart?
- Each is a quarter of its country's gallon, and the gallons differ. The US gallon is 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L), so a US quart is 946.35 mL. The UK gallon is 4.54609 L, so an imperial quart is 1,136.52 mL — about 20% bigger. That's why 2 L is 2.11 US quarts but only 1.76 UK quarts. American recipes, US motor oil bottles, and US milk cartons all use the US quart.
- What about the US dry quart?
- It's a separate unit — 1.101220942715 L, about 16% bigger than the US liquid quart — used for dry goods like berries, cherry tomatoes, and grain sold by volume. If you're measuring a liquid (water, milk, oil, stock), you want the liquid quart this converter shows. A 1-liter bottle is 0.91 dry quarts, but nobody measures soda that way.
- What's a quick way to estimate liters to quarts in my head?
- For US quarts, add 5%. 4 L → about 4.2 qt (exact: 4.23). 10 L → about 10.5 qt (exact: 10.57). For a very rough answer, just treat liters and US quarts as the same — you'll be about 5% low. For UK quarts, subtract 12%: 5 L is about 4.4 imperial quarts (exact: 4.40).
- My car takes 4.7 liters of oil. How many quarts is that?
- 4.97 US quarts — call it 5 quarts, which is how most US oil comes packaged. Owner's manuals from European and Asian carmakers often list oil capacity in liters, while US shelves sell oil by the quart. Check whether the listed capacity includes the filter; the with-filter figure is usually a few tenths of a liter higher.
- Is a 2-liter soda bottle more than 2 quarts?
- Yes, slightly. 2 L is 2.1134 US quarts, so the bottle holds about 107 mL more than 2 quarts — a bit under half a cup. Against UK quarts it's the other way around: 2 L is only 1.76 imperial quarts.
- How many cups is a quart, and how does that compare to a liter?
- One US quart is 4 US cups (2 pints, 32 US fluid ounces). A liter is 1.0567 US quarts, so it's about 4.23 US cups. If a recipe calls for 1 L of stock and you only have cup measures, 4 cups plus a scant quarter cup gets you there.
- How precise is the answer?
- The conversion uses the exact defined values, so the only rounding is for display: four decimals once you're at a quart or more, six below that (0.5 L shows as 0.528344). Very large volumes show as whole quarts with commas. Copy formula gives you the full calculation if you need to show your work.
- Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored, and closing the tab clears it.
