Minutes divide by 60, seconds by 3,600 — so 7:45 is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. Starting from two clock times instead? Hours calculator

Type hours, minutes and seconds. Get decimal hours. A shift logged as 7:45 is 7.75 hours — the digits after the decimal point are fractions of an hour, not minutes, which is why writing it as 7.45 quietly underpays by 18 minutes. Payroll systems, invoicing tools, and most spreadsheet formulas want the decimal form; the clock on your wall gives you the other one. This converts between them and shows the same duration four more ways: total minutes, total seconds, a normalised h:mm:ss, and the two roundings payroll actually uses — nearest quarter hour (15-minute blocks) and nearest tenth (6-minute blocks). Minutes aren't capped at 59, so a day logged as 470 minutes converts straight to 7.8333 hours without you doing the carrying first.

How to use

  1. 1

Type the hours, minutes and seconds from your time card. Any box can be left blank — 45 minutes on its own converts fine, and so does 470.

  2. 2

Read decimal hours in the big number. That's the figure payroll and invoicing systems expect. Repeating values like 50 ÷ 60 show four decimal places and the formula line switches to ≈ so you know it's been rounded for display.

  3. 3

Check the quarter-hour and tenth-of-an-hour lines if your employer rounds. Each line has its own Copy button.

  4. 4

Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate to get gross pay — 7.75 × $22 = $170.50. Never multiply the h:mm form; 7.45 × $22 is $163.90, and the $6.60 gap is the whole reason this page exists.
