What is a Christmas countdown?
A Christmas countdown tells you how long is left until Christmas: days, hours, minutes, and seconds, ticking live. This one counts to midnight at the start of December 25 in your own time zone. Underneath, it shows the same wait as sleeps, as weeks and days, and names the weekday Christmas lands on.
Counting down to Christmas is older than electricity. Families in 19th-century Germany chalked a line on the door for each day of December, or burned an Advent candle down one mark a night. Kids have always counted in sleeps. The question hasn't changed, only the screen. "How many days until Christmas" gets searched about 786,000 times a month in the US alone, and the number climbs every week from October on.
Most of what comes back for that search is heavier than the question. App listings want an install and a notification permission before they'll show you one number. Countdown sites still carry last year's date in their page text. Some count to midnight in a time zone that isn't yours. Others turn "how long until Christmas" into a "create your own countdown" sign-up funnel. The Christmas Countdown shows the number, in your time zone, for this year's Christmas. How to use the Christmas Countdown
There's nothing to set up. The number is running before you finish this sentence.
- Open the page. The countdown starts on its own and counts to 00:00 on December 25 in your device's time zone.
- Read the big line: days, hours, minutes, seconds. The digits keep a fixed width, so they don't jitter as they tick.
- Read the line underneath for sleeps, the same wait in weeks and days, and the weekday and date of Christmas.
- If your family celebrates on the evening of the 24th, tap Christmas Eve. The page remembers that choice on this device.
- Tap Copy to paste a line like "24 days until Christmas" (with the date in brackets) into a group chat. Or tap Full screen to put the countdown on a TV or a classroom projector. Press Esc to leave.
That's the whole tool. No themes, no music, no Santa tracker, no reminder emails. If you want a countdown to something that isn't Christmas, the countdown timer takes any date and time you give it.
How the countdown is calculated
The obvious way to build a countdown is to subtract the current moment from the target moment in milliseconds, then divide. It's also a little off for a big chunk of the year, in most of the countries that celebrate Christmas. This tool counts the way you would on a paper calendar instead:
Sleeps = December 25 − today's date, in whole calendar days
Time left = sleeps × 86,400 seconds − seconds already gone today
The time left then splits into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Sleeps divided by 7 gives the weeks, and the remainder gives the extra days.
A worked example
Say it's 10:15:30 in the morning on September 14.
- Sleeps: 16 days left in September, plus 31 in October, 30 in November, and 25 in December. That's 102.
- Seconds gone today: 10 × 3,600 + 15 × 60 + 30 = 36,930.
- Time left: 102 × 86,400 = 8,812,800 seconds. Minus 36,930 leaves 8,775,870.
- Split it: 101 whole days is 8,726,400 seconds, which leaves 49,470. That's 13 hours (46,800), then 44 minutes (2,640), then 30 seconds.
The countdown reads 101 days 13 hrs 44 min 30 sec, with 102 sleeps and 14 weeks, 4 days underneath.
Why not just subtract milliseconds?
Daylight saving time. In New York, clocks fall back an hour on the first Sunday of November. So between midnight on September 14 and midnight on December 25, 2,449 real hours pass, not 2,448. A millisecond countdown opened at midnight that night reads 102 days 01 hrs. It's midnight, Christmas starts at midnight, and the clock claims there's an extra hour. That looks like a bug because, to anyone reading it, it is one.
Most of Europe changes clocks on the last Sunday of October, so it has the same problem. Sydney has it backwards: clocks spring forward in early October, and a raw subtraction comes up an hour short, at 101 days 23 hrs. Counting calendar days first sidesteps all of it. At midnight, this countdown reads 00 hrs 00 min 00 sec, whatever your clocks did in between.
Days until Christmas from common dates
The live answer to "how many days until Christmas" is at the top of the page. This table is for planning ahead: how far a given date sits from Christmas Day and from Christmas Eve. Each count starts at midnight on that date, so days and sleeps are the same number.

Only the January and February rows change with the year. In a leap year, February 29 falls inside the wait, and each of those counts grows by one. From March 1 on, the numbers are the same every year.
A few patterns worth knowing. From December 1 it's always 24 sleeps, which is why most Advent calendars have 24 doors: one each morning, December 1 through 24. Halloween to Christmas is 55 days, just under eight weeks. US Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, somewhere between the 22nd and the 28th, so it lands 27 to 33 days before Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is always between November 27 and December 3, which puts it 22 to 28 days out.
Planning a school break or a shipping deadline? Sleeps are the number to use. They only change at midnight, so "12 sleeps" means the same thing at breakfast and at bedtime.
Edge cases and limitations
The Christmas Countdown is a few lines of calendar math running in your browser. That keeps it fast and private, and it comes with a few honest limits.
- It trusts your device clock. There's no network time check. If your phone thinks it's the 3rd when it's the 4th, the countdown is off by a day. If the number looks wrong, check the date and time zone in your settings first.
- Time zones are local, on purpose. Christmas doesn't arrive everywhere at once. Kiritimati, in Kiribati, sits at UTC+14 and reaches midnight first. American Samoa, at UTC−11, gets there 25 hours later. Sydney beats Los Angeles by 19 hours. Everyone sees the countdown to their own midnight. Counting to a relative's Christmas overseas? - On the day itself, it celebrates instead of going negative. On December 25 the page says "It's Christmas." with the days until next Christmas underneath: 365, or 366 when a February 29 falls in between. At midnight on the 26th it rolls over and starts counting again. Christmas Eve mode does the same thing on the 24th.
- It counts to December 25 only. Orthodox churches that follow the older Julian calendar celebrate on January 7. That's a different countdown, and this page doesn't do it.
- Full screen hides itself on iPhone. Web pages can't go full screen in the iPhone browser, so the button doesn't show there. Turn the phone sideways for a bigger number.
- The page never types today's count into its text. A day count written into a web page is right for one day and wrong for the next 364. The live number appears only after the page reads your clock. With JavaScript off, you'll see a dash and "Christmas is December 25."

How many days until Christmas?
Look at the top of the page. That number is live and counts to midnight on December 25 where you are. We don't write today's count into this article on purpose, because it would be wrong by tomorrow. For planning: from December 1 it's 24 days, from Halloween it's 55, and from September 1 it's 115.
How many sleeps until Christmas?
Sleeps are the nights left before the big day, which is how most kids count. They only change at midnight. On Christmas Eve it's 1 sleep all day long, while the clock at 6:30 in the evening reads 0 days 05 hrs 30 min. That's why days and sleeps are often one apart.
Should I count down to Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
Count to the day your family actually celebrates. In Germany, Poland, much of Latin America, and Scandinavia, the main event is the evening of December 24: Heiligabend, Wigilia, Nochebuena, julaften. In the US, the UK, and Australia, presents usually wait for the morning of the 25th. The Christmas Eve button switches the target, and your pick stays saved in this browser.
Do I need to download a Christmas countdown app?

Why does another countdown show a different number?
Usually one of three things. It's counting in a different time zone, it subtracted milliseconds across a daylight saving change and picked up an extra hour, or its page text was written for last year. If both pages agree on the date but differ by exactly one hour, it's daylight saving time.
Does the countdown keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes, and it catches up instantly. The countdown never subtracts one second at a time. Every tick, it recomputes from your device clock. Leave the tab for an hour, or close your laptop overnight, and the number is right the moment you come back.
Why is Christmas on December 25?
The Bible doesn't give a date. The earliest record of a December 25 Christmas is a Roman calendar compiled in 354, which lists the feast as already kept in Rome in 336. The date spread through the church from there. Churches that still follow the Julian calendar keep December 25 on it, and that day lands on January 7 on the calendar most of the world uses.
