  2. 2

What does the KPH to MPH Converter do?

It turns a speed in kilometers per hour into miles per hour. Type 100 and you get 62.14 mph. Type 119 and you get 73.94 mph. The answer updates as you type, with no button to press.

Under the mph figure you also get the same speed in meters per second, plus the full calculation with your number plugged in, ready to copy. The converter reads the speed the way people actually write it: 100, 99.5, 100 km/h, 100 kph, 100 kmh and 100 km all work.

People land here for three reasons. A road sign or a rental car speaks km/h and their brain speaks mph. A weather report gives wind in km/h. Or a spec sheet, a race result or a train top speed is written in the other unit. The math is the same for all three, and it's one division.

How to convert km/h to mph

Divide the speed in km/h by 1.609344.

mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344

That number is not a rounded estimate. It is the exact length of a mile in kilometers, fixed in 1959 when the US, the UK and other Commonwealth countries agreed that a yard is exactly 0.9144 meters. A mile is 1,760 yards, so a mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters. Both units count per hour, so the hour cancels out and the distance factor is the whole conversion.

Multiplying by 0.621371 gives the same answer to the second decimal, because 1 ÷ 1.609344 = 0.621371...

Worked example. A storm forecast says sustained winds of 119 km/h. 119 ÷ 1.609344 = 73.94 mph. In meters per second, 119 ÷ 3.6 = 33.06 m/s. That's the bottom edge of a Category 1 hurricane.

Want the speed in meters per second instead? Divide km/h by 3.6. A kilometer is 1,000 meters and an hour is 3,600 seconds, so 36 km/h is exactly 10 m/s. The converter shows this line under every result.

km/h to mph conversion table

The converter already shows common road speed limits (30 to 130 km/h) under the input. This table covers the rest: walking and cycling speeds at the low end, fast trains and race cars at the top. Every value is the converter's own output, rounded to two decimals.

Need a number that isn't here? Type it in. The converter handles decimals, so 99.5 km/h gives 61.83 mph.

Storm and hurricane winds in km/h and mph

A lot of km/h searches are really weather searches. Forecasters outside the US give wind in km/h, while US coverage uses mph, and the two never line up neatly. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, used by the US National Hurricane Center, publishes every category in both units:

CategorySustained wind (km/h)Sustained wind (mph)Bottom edge, converted exactly
Tropical storm63–11839–7363 km/h = 39.15 mph
Category 1119–15374–95119 km/h = 73.94 mph
Category 2154–17796–110154 km/h = 95.69 mph
Category 3 (major)178–208111–129178 km/h = 110.6 mph
Category 4 (major)209–251130–156209 km/h = 129.87 mph
Category 5 (major)252 and up157 and up252 km/h = 156.59 mph

Notice the last column never matches the mph column exactly. That's not an error in either one. The scale rounds each unit to a whole number on its own, so 178 km/h becomes "111 mph" on the chart even though the exact conversion is 110.6. If you're comparing a forecast to the chart, use the chart's own unit. If you need the precise speed, use the exact conversion.

Converting km/h to mph in your head

You don't always have a phone out, and a rough number is fine for a road sign. Here's how the common shortcuts hold up against the exact answer:

Shortcut100 km/h givesExactHow far off
Multiply by 0.6 (times 6, drop a zero)6062.143.4% low
Multiply by 5, divide by 862.562.140.6% high
Multiply by 0.626262.140.2% low

The 0.6 trick is the easiest and always reads low, which is the safe direction on a road: it tells you you're going a little slower than you are, so keep that margin in mind. Five-eighths is the best mix of easy and accurate.

There's also a party trick. Consecutive Fibonacci numbers (5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144) sit almost exactly in the km-to-mile ratio. So 89 km/h is about 55 mph (exact: 55.3), and 144 km/h is about 89 mph (exact: 89.48). It's within about 1% at every step, and it works because the golden ratio, 1.618, happens to sit close to 1.609.

Mistakes that give the wrong answer

Dividing by 1.6. It's close, but it reads high. 120 ÷ 1.6 = 75, against an exact 74.56. On a spec sheet or a homework answer, that gap matters. Use 1.609344.

Mixing up km and km/h. Searches like "157 km to mph" usually mean km/h. A kilometer is a distance and a mile per hour is a speed, so strictly they don't convert. The converter assumes you meant km/h and treats "157 km" the same as "157 km/h". If you really mean distance, use the km to miles converter.

Reading mph as knots. Boats, planes and marine forecasts use knots, which are nautical miles per hour. A nautical mile is 1.852 km, longer than a land mile. The mph this converter gives is statute miles per hour, the unit on US and UK road signs.

A comma used as a decimal point. In much of Europe, 99,5 means ninety-nine and a half. The converter asks you to use a dot for decimals, and if you type a number like 1,250 it shows a note saying which reading it used.

Typing a value that's already in mph. If you add "mph" to the end, the converter stops and tells you, rather than converting it a second time.

Frequently asked questions

Is kph the same as km/h, kmh and kmph?

Yes. They're four ways of writing kilometers per hour. km/h is the official SI symbol and what you'll see on most road signs and speedometers. kph and kmh are common in English-speaking countries and on car spec sheets. kmph shows up mostly in India. The converter accepts all of them.

How do I convert mph back to km/h?

Multiply by 1.609344. 60 mph is 96.56 km/h, and 70 mph is 112.65 km/h. This converter only runs in the km/h-to-mph direction, so for the reverse, do the multiplication or use the speed calculator to work from distance and time.

Is 100 km/h fast?

It's 62.14 mph, a normal highway speed. It's the standard highway limit across much of Canada, and sits inside the 55 to 70 mph range of most US highway limits. On a city street it would be dangerously fast.

How fast is 200 km/h in mph?

124.27 mph. That's high-speed train territory, or a sports car on a track. 300 km/h is 186.41 mph.

How many mph is 1 km/h?

0.6214 mph. For speeds under 1 mph, the converter shows four decimals instead of two, so small values don't round to zero.

Why does my running pace show km/h?

Running watches and treadmills outside the US often default to metric. 10 km/h is 6.21 mph, roughly a 9:39 mile. If you'd rather think in minutes per mile or per kilometer, the running pace calculator handles that directly.
