Two Weeks' Notice Generator

Tone
Format

You took the new job. Now your manager needs a two weeks' notice, and the only number on it that matters is your last day. Type your name and company and the notice is already written, dated today, with that last day counted for you: fourteen days out, moved back to the Friday before if it lands on a Saturday or Sunday. The page tells you when it moved it. Pick Standard, Grateful or Brief, Letter or Email, and whether to offer help with the handover. There's no box for a reason, because a two weeks' notice records facts, not feelings, and the standard version is under seventy words. Copy it, download it as a text file, or print just the letter. Nothing is saved and nothing leaves the page, which matters if you're writing this on a work computer or a shared one in the break room.

How to use

  1. 1

Type your name and your company. The notice fills in as you type.

  2. 2

Check today's date. Your last day appears right under it: two weeks out, moved back to Friday if that's a weekend.

  3. 3

Add your manager's name and job title if you want them in the notice. Leave them blank and it reads "To whom it may concern" and "my position at [Company]".

  4. 4

Working a different last day, or a weekend shift? Type it into "Different last day?" — a date you pick is never moved.

  5. 5

Pick Standard, Grateful or Brief, and Letter (dated, for printing) or Email (with a subject line).

  6. 6

Copy it, download it as a .txt file, or print the letter. In email mode, copy the subject and the body separately.

What does the Two Weeks' Notice Generator do?

It writes a formal two weeks' notice letter or email from your name, your company and the date you hand it in, and it works out your last day for you. Type two fields and the notice is done. Here is the standard version, dated Monday, September 28, 2026:

September 28, 2026

Dear Jordan Lee,

Please accept this letter as my formal two weeks' notice of resignation from my position as Account Manager at Northwind Traders. My last day of work will be October 12, 2026.

Over the next two weeks I'll do everything I can to wrap up my work and hand it over smoothly.

Sincerely,
Maya Chen

That's 60 words, counting the date and the signature. It says you're leaving, it says when, and it offers to help with the handover. Nothing else belongs in a notice like this, so nothing else is in it.

The notice is on the page before you type anything, with [Your name] and [Company] holding the spots. It fills in as you type. When it's right, you copy it, download it as a .txt file, or print just the letter. There's no account, no email field and no "upgrade to download" button. This is the full tool.

Why a two weeks' notice letter deserves a generator

This is the most formulaic document most people ever write. You'd think the internet would hand it over in five seconds. It mostly doesn't.

Search for a two weeks' notice letter and you get the same shape over and over. A long page of sample letters with blanks in them. A résumé builder waiting at the bottom. A .docx download that wants an account first. Some sites now offer an AI letter writer, inside a monthly plan you'll have to remember to cancel. That's a subscription for a document you send a handful of times in your whole career.

And almost all of them leave you the one part that's easy to get wrong: the date.

Counting two weeks sounds trivial. Then you hand in your notice on a Saturday, count fourteen days, and promise your manager you'll work a Saturday you were never scheduled for. Or you count on your fingers at the end of a shift and land one day off. The date is the only fact in the letter that anyone acts on. Payroll uses it. Your manager plans coverage around it. Your new job may have a start date pinned to it.

So the Two Weeks' Notice Generator does the counting, shows you the result right under the date field, and tells you when it changed something. The rest is three short paragraphs of plain English that read the same whether you're leaving a restaurant, a hospital ward or a corner office.

How the last day is counted

The rule is fixed: the date on the letter plus fourteen calendar days. If that lands on a Saturday or a Sunday, the tool moves it back to the Friday before and shows a note: "Moved to Friday — your last working day." It moves back, never forward, so your notice never runs longer than two weeks.

Here is every starting day in one week, run through the tool:

You hand in your noticeFourteen days laterLast day on the noticeMoved?
Monday, October 12, 2026Monday, October 26October 26, 2026No
Tuesday, October 13, 2026Tuesday, October 27October 27, 2026No
Wednesday, October 14, 2026Wednesday, October 28October 28, 2026No

Saturday, October 17, 2026Saturday, October 31October 30, 2026Yes, back one day
Sunday, October 18, 2026Sunday, November 1October 30, 2026Yes, back two days

Notice the last three rows. Friday, Saturday and Sunday notices all end on the same Friday. If you're deciding which day to hand it in, a weekend notice buys you nothing.

The date defaults to today, read from your own device's clock. That matters more than it sounds. A page that reads the date in UTC is already on tomorrow by late afternoon in California. Write your notice at 5:30 p.m. in Los Angeles on one of those and it's dated the wrong day. This one uses the date your computer shows you.

You can also type your own last day into "Different last day?". A date you pick is kept exactly as you typed it, weekend or not. If you work Saturdays, you can give notice on Thursday, October 15, 2026 and set your last shift to Saturday, October 31. The notice will say October 31, 2026 and won't touch it. If you pick a last day before the letter date, the tool stops and says so: "Your last day is before the letter date. Pick a later day."

Customizing the notice

The Two Weeks' Notice Generator needs only your name and company. Everything else changes the wording, and each choice changes it in a predictable way:

OptionChoicesDefaultWhat it changes
Manager's nameAny name, or blankBlank"Dear Jordan Lee," or, left blank, "To whom it may concern,"
Job titleAny title, or blankBlank"my position as Account Manager at…" or "my position at…"
ToneStandard, Grateful, BriefStandardGrateful adds one thank-you paragraph. Brief cuts the notice to two plain sentences, signed "Thank you".
FormatLetter, EmailLetterLetter puts the date on top for printing. Email drops it and adds the subject line "Two Weeks' Notice — Maya Chen".
Handover offerOn, OffOnAdds or removes the line offering to wrap up your work

With a manager's name and a job title filled in, the letter versions run 60 words for Standard, 76 for Grateful and 46 for Brief. The email versions are three words shorter each, because the date line is gone.

Which tone fits? Standard is right for almost everyone. Pick Grateful when you liked the job and want that on file. Pick Brief when your manager reads on a phone between tasks, or when the less said, the better. Here's the Brief email, same details as above:

Dear Jordan Lee,

This is my formal two weeks' notice. I am resigning from my position as Account Manager at Northwind Traders, and my last day will be October 12, 2026.

I'll help wrap things up before I go.

Thank you,
Maya Chen

Every tone says "two weeks' notice" in so many words and names the same date. Nobody can read any of them as anything other than a resignation.

In email mode you get two copy buttons, one for the subject and one for the body, so you can paste each into the right box. The download keeps the subject at the top of the .txt file. Print only appears in letter mode, and it prints the letter alone, without the rest of the page around it.

How to give two weeks' notice without burning a bridge

The letter is the easy part. The order you do things in is what people remember.

  1. Get the new offer in writing first. Wait until the background check and references have cleared, too. Notice is hard to take back.
  2. Tell your manager before you send anything. In person or on a call. A resignation that shows up in someone's inbox cold is the version they'll tell stories about.
  3. Send the written notice the same day. The spoken conversation is the courtesy. The letter is the record, and its date starts the two weeks.
  4. Copy HR if your company has one. They handle the final paycheck, benefits and any vacation payout, and they'll want the last day in writing.
  5. Keep your own copy. The .txt download is there for this. Save it somewhere that isn't a work computer.

Writing this at work? The Two Weeks' Notice Generator saves nothing. No draft sits in your browser's storage, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Close the tab and the next person at that shared computer sees a blank form. Your manager won't stumble onto it before you've had the conversation.

One more thing: leave the reason out. Your notice goes in your personnel file, and a reason in writing invites a counteroffer or an argument. That's why there's no box for one. If you want to explain, thank people at length, or give a notice period other than two weeks, the Resignation Letter Generator handles the longer letter.

When the date math needs a human

The Two Weeks' Notice Generator moves your last day off weekends. It doesn't move it off holidays, because which days your employer closes for varies too much to guess. Some fourteen-day counts land squarely on one:

Notice handed inLast day the tool givesThat day is
Thursday, November 12, 2026November 26, 2026Thanksgiving
Friday, December 11, 2026December 25, 2026Christmas Day
Friday, December 18, 2026January 1, 2027New Year's Day

If that happens, type the day you actually mean into "Different last day?". Most people pick the working day before the holiday. To see which weekdays your two weeks really cover, the Business Days Calculator counts working days between two dates and skips US federal holidays.

A few other cases where you should overrule the default:

  • Your contract or handbook names a different period. Some employers ask for ten working days, some for a month. Follow the paper you signed.
  • Your new job starts on a set date. Count back from it. The Days From Today Calculator tells you what date lands any number of days out.
  • You work outside the US or UK. In much of the world, notice is set by law and depends on how long you've worked there. Two weeks may be too short, or the wrong kind of document entirely.

A notice is one document in a short run of them. While you're leaving, ask your manager or a colleague for a reference; if they'd rather you draft it, the Reference Letter Generator turns what they've seen you do into a letter they'd sign. And if you're counting down to a start date, the Weeks From Today Calculator answers "what's the date six weeks out" without a calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hand in my notice on a Friday?

Yes, and it's a common choice. Notice given on Friday, October 16, 2026 runs to Friday, October 30, 2026, a clean two full work weeks. Your manager gets the weekend to plan coverage, and you skip an awkward week of half-finished conversations.

Who should I address a two weeks' notice to?

Your direct manager, by name. Put their name in the "Manager's name" field and the notice opens "Dear Jordan Lee,". Leave it blank and it opens "To whom it may concern," which works for a large company where the letter goes to HR. Copy HR either way.

What if my employer tells me to leave right away?

In most of the US they can, since most jobs are at-will. Some employers pay out the two weeks and some don't. Ask directly, and get the answer in writing. Your notice still did its job: it shows you offered two weeks, which protects your reference and any rehire.

Can I take back my notice after handing it in?

Only if your employer agrees. Once the notice is handed in, they can accept it and start hiring. That's why the order matters: don't send it until the new offer is signed and cleared.

Do part-time and hourly workers need to give two weeks' notice?

It's the same custom, and it matters just as much for a reference. If your last two weeks include weekend shifts, type your real last shift into "Different last day?" so the notice matches the schedule. A date you choose is never moved.

What if my name has an accent or my company name is long?

The Two Weeks' Notice Generator keeps accents, apostrophes and non-Latin letters exactly as you type them. Each field takes up to 100 characters. Line breaks pasted into a field turn into single spaces, so a name copied from an email signature still prints on one line.
